What is Green Cleaning?
Green Cleaning is the implementation of a janitorial program resulting from an assessment of the environmental impact of cleaning supplies and materials on a facility and it’s occupants.

The Green Cleaning assessment targets cleaning chemicals, paper products and janitorial equipment, and then outlines a specific cleaning process that has an environmentally sound strategy.

Once the process is in place, employees are trained to use the Green Cleaning plan to protect the health of the facilities occupants and environment.

Green Seal

Green Seal is a national nonprofit labeling organization that identifies products that are environmentally responsible. Products that receive the “Green Seal of Approval” have been thoroughly tested to meet exacting environmental standards.

Green Seal that a product is environmentally sound. Rest assured that the Green Seal is applied only to products that will help reduce air and water pollution, limit energy consumption and the effects of global warming, and protect fragile fish and wildlife habitats.

Read the Fine Print
Every product that is Green Seal certified also includes information about how it meets stringent guidelines. Information about the environmental attributes of Green Seal products and packaging is printed right on the label.

Janitorial Equipment
Soil removal and dust contamination are two other targets of Green Cleaning. With the proper janitorial equipment, these two contaminants are effectively removed. Matting, Vacuum Filters, Floor Scrubbers, and Burnishers are all valuable tools when handling any facilities Green Cleaning floor care needs.

Enviromental Choice-Ecologo

The Envionmental Choice-Ecologo is an environmental certification mark. It shows that the product has been manufactured in a sustainable way. It shows that the product will minimalize its impact on the environment throughout it's entire life cycle.

How Can You Recognize a “Green” Facility?

Cleaning personnel and building occupants are committed to creating an environment that is healthy for both people and the environment.

The facilities are cleaned and maintained as a unit, not as individual components.

Routine maintenance is planned, recorded, efficient and effective.

A response plan is in place to handle accidents and incidents, such as spills, weather-related problems, water leaks, and smoke.

Humans are minimally exposed to harmful contaminants and cleaning chemicals.

Cleaning waste is disposed of responsibly.

Only minimal pollutants enter the building.
5 Steps to Greener Facilities

Custodial staff is key to creating and maintaining a healthy and sustainable environment.

So how can your facility get there?

1. Buy certified green cleaning products and train custodial personnel how to use them. After cleaning, use a disinfectant only if necessary. Use products that minimize soil residue and do not require a rinse step.
2. Use green equipment and supplies, such as vacuums with high-efficiency filters. Always follow manufacturer instructions and precautions.
3. Buy environmentally-friendly paper and plastic products, and dispose of them responsibly.
4. Practice green cleaning processes, such as using cold water, spraying cleaning chemicals on a cloth, and practicing integrated pest management. When possible, reduce the need to clean, and investigate new cleaning technologies such as microfiber cloths and HEPA filters.
5. Educate personnel at all levels about how to create an environmentally-healthy environment.
